I couldn’t let the day go by without mentioning that today is Dr. King’s birthday. He was born on January 15, 1929, and had he lived, he would have been 83 today. Next Monday, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr’s holiday. It is the 3rd Monday in January. Sadly, Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 by James Earl Ray as he stepped out on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. His life was taken way too soon. I admire Dr. King for his civil rights movements, his desire for all men and women to live in peace, and to be recognized as fellow human beings, regardless of color. He achieved many things  during his lifetime, including winning the Nobel peace prize. So we should honor him with a federal holiday. Men like Dr. King, President John F. Kennedy, and Senator Robert F. Kennedy were killed just because someone didn’t agree with them, and didn’t like what they were saying. That is a terrible reason to take another human life. Sure, we can disagree with others, but there is never any reason to kill them just because you don’t like them. I often wonder what would have happened if all three of these great men had lived. Maybe our world would have benefited by having them still with us. Who knows what great things could have been accomplished.  Unfortunately, we didn’t get the chance to find out.
