Gone but not forgotten: The passing of a tv legend Sheriff John Rovick

17 Oct

If you don’t live in the southern california area, then my post today may not mean anything to you personally, but keep reading, you may find this interesting.  You see there was a local tv show that originated from one of the Los Angeles tv studios. He went by the name of Sheriff John. He wasn’t a real Sheriff, but to thousands of local kids, he was. He wore a Sheriffs outfit. I remember that he would call out names of children who had a birthday on that day. I even mailed my birthday information to him, and true to his word,  he called my full name for many years. The show was entertaining. It was a wholesome program, and John tried to instill values and morals into the children that watched. The show ran from the July 18, 1952  to July 10, 1970, so he had a long run. He had many guest, and for the most part, he kept children glued to the set during the entire program. Well, I was surprised to find out that he was still alive, but then saddened to hear that he passed away in his sleep on Oct 6,  2012 in nursing home in Idaho. He had just celebrated his 93rd birthday on Oct 2, 2012. To me, watching him was like watching American Bandstand. It was just something we kids looked forward to tuning in and watching. John Rovik did a lot for children, and was much-loved. So I will miss him, but I thank him for entertaining the baby boomers for years. Thanks for leaving a lasting impression, and for doing your best to raise upright citizens. There will never be another man like sheriff John Rovik.
